Shoulder month, good weather, fewer tourists. The city is calm and navigable. Good time to do the classics without crowds: Mitad del Mundo, the historic centre, the teleférico up Pichincha. On September 30, Teatro Nacional CCE hosts a live concert. If you're here this month, treat it as the setup — the action builds from October.
OctoberQuito turns into a concert city in October. Highlights:
- Oct 4Apocalyptica — Teatro San Gabriel
- Oct 9Grupo Frontera — Coliseo Rumiñahui. Also Día de la Independencia de Guayaquil — festive mood city-wide
- Oct 14Iron Maiden with The Raven Age — Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa
- Oct 24The Rasmus — Teatro Bolívar, a stunning restored 1930s theatre worth seeing regardless of who's playing
- Oct 30Def Leppard with Extreme — Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa
October 12, Día de la Raza, brings street programming and cultural events in the historic centre.
NovemberNovember 2 — Día de los Muertos. This is genuinely special in Ecuador. Families gather at cemeteries across the city with flowers, candles, and food. The traditional meal is colada morada — a thick purple drink made from black corn, fruit, and spices — served with guaguas de pan, bread figures shaped like people. Markets around the historic centre sell both throughout the week. Not a party; a ritual worth witnessing.
November 15 — Cypress Hill, Coliseo Rumiñahui.
Fiestas de Quito (Dec 1–6, holiday Dec 7)
This is the main event. Quito celebrates the founding of the city and loses its mind in the best possible way for a full week.
Chiva rides
Open-top party buses (chivas) loaded with passengers, live bands, and dancing circle the city all night. The historic centre and La Ronda fill with rolling street parties. Book a spot or just flag one down. This is the experience.
Canelazo
The drink of the fiestas. Hot cinnamon (canela), naranjilla juice, and aguardiente. Served everywhere, especially along La Ronda, where bars run it alongside empanadas de viento. Drink it standing in the street like everyone else.
Fireworks
Nightly, impromptu, everywhere. The Panecillo hill provides the backdrop. No schedule needed.
Bullfighting
Plaza de Toros hosts corridas throughout the fiestas. Controversial but culturally significant; the arena is one of the finest in Latin America.
Live concerts, parades, street markets, bingo in the plazas — the calendar is packed and changes year to year. Check the Municipio de Quito's programme as December approaches.
Logistics note: Hotels fill up. Book accommodation for Dec 1–6 at least a month in advance. Prices rise. Worth it.
Fly above it all
Between the concerts and the fiestas, catch clear-sky mornings over Quito — paragliding routes into AeroPark run from Cruz Loma and Cerro Auqui.
